I’m glad she said this. I think more people need to talk about this, to call it out, because I think there’s this assumption that the indie world is full of nice guys who have evolved beyond sexism, which is anything but true. I realized a long time ago that any indie-centric show I went to in NYC, any bar, whatever, was likely to have these very same anonymous commenters lurking around somewhere. It’s easy to pretend they’re not, that they’re part of someone else’s life or social circle, but these creeps are everywhere and need to be shamed.

Tip of the fucking iceberg. Anonymous commenters are one thing, critics another. I’ve spent the last 9 days researching and reading about Lana Del Rey for a pc. I am writing and the profesh take on her sexuality and looks, even from feminist corners is so grim and narrow, treating her less than human, like she’s the fourth fucking Kardashian sister. Because you can’t be pretty, self-directed, write good songs, sexy b/c you want to be as part of your own self expression—you know, all at once. It must be a trick and she must be “faking” all or part—and how dare she! I was interviewing someone who works closely to her and he was trying to think of a make artist who gets treated the same way, whose looks are scrutinized and speculated on, or some guy who everyone assumes there is some dude-in-a-tie svengali behind the scenes shaping and honing… and naturally he couldn’t because it does. not. happen.

I want to start a blog called “tumblr posts about people getting angry over Brooklyn Vegan comments.” I have been the “victim” of such anonymous commenters before and I’m sorry but it’s the fucking internet and if you’re putting yourself out there, people are going to hate on you. They’re fucking stupid but it’s nothing to get riled up about. If you’re going to let BROOKLYN VEGAN COMMENTERS affect you, you’re going to have a hard time dealing with life in general sorry. Also think about everything else that is Brooklyn Vegan other than the commenters. There is amazing content, great photos, etc. If you’re in some band, you probably got really psyched when Brooklyn Vegan covered one of your shows so shut the fuck up.
Sorry BV haters really piss me off because if it weren’t for BV I’d probably be living a completely different life (i.e one that sucked and wouldn’t be as amazing as mine currently is).
AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BV MONITORS/BLOCKS A LOT OF COMMENTS THAT ARE AWFUL. But it’s ONE person and it’s a lot to ask of ONE GUY to make sure every fucking person doesn’t get butt hurt over some stupid asshole in their room acting tough as an anon on BROOKLYN. VEGAN.
shut up.
